OMJ has struggled listening to the Grinders Podders flounder as they attempt to explain his “silly” stats. GAPE Chicken is here to try and simplify Defense and Game Score stats for everyone.
Defense
Despite the collective, legendary stat keeping abilities that are displayed every week at the EBC, there are very few ways to actually measure “defense”. OMJ and I would love to offer you more advanced analytics, like comparing how a defender impacts a Grinders performance compared to their other games, but that’s just not possible currently. Also, there are very good rebounders who aren’t necessarily the best defenders – so that had to be accounted for. And, regardless of perception – it is accounted for.
Formula: Rebounds/3 + Steals x2 + Blocks x2
Example: Malicki gets 15 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks
- 15 /3 =5
- 2×2=4
- 3×2=6
- Total: 15 Defense
What about Defensive Rebounds? Why not just use those? Maybe OMJ will… but this was the first season for that stat so it hasn’t been included yet. What about Zach? OMJ can’t help Zach without more advanced analytics. OMJ suggests just give him Defensive MVP every session and relax.
Game Score
After the great General, Cory M, was recognized as Guy of The Week in Week 10, OMJ realized this formula needed to be tweaked a bit more. Previously, OMJ had tried to limit this stat for Grinders who shoot less than 5 shots, but go 3/3. Cory went 5/6. So his Game Score was still artificially bloated. I, the GAPE Chicken, suggested the limiter be increased to 10. So that’s what OMJ said it is now (would have reduced Cory’s Game Score to a more reasonable 55ish).
Having a decent GAPE may not indicate a Grinder had a decent game. Shoot like poo or have too many turnovers, and your GAPE may be irrelevant. The GameScore stat tries to measure a single game performance based on a wide variety of factors. Go ahead and debate whether this stat is successful in that endeavor – I heard the leagues issues, especially this session, are very important to OMJ…
Formula: GAPE + (100-Suck)
GAPE: (Points+FGM+REB+AST+STL+BLK-TO-FGA-AIR)
Suck: 1 – (1+FGM)/(FGA + TO + AIR) x 100
(FGA will be a minimum of 10, regardless of FGA).
Example – Mike Malicki vs Cole in Finals of 2022.1:
- 18/33, 47 pts, 15 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 1 TO
- GAPE: 49
- Suck: (1-(1+18)/(33+1))x100=44.118
- 100-44.118+49=104.882
- Game Score was 104.9 (pretty good)
Why do Gersitz and Cole always have high Game Scores? They have high GAPE, and generally have high FG%, with few turnovers and Airballs. Well, Gersitz has few turnovers. Does this stat generally pick out 3 worth guys? OMJ says it does.
